Regarded as unique in school banding circles, the Kalkie School Drum Band has become well known to tens of thousands of people through its appearances at festivals in Queensland and northern New South Wales for more than 4 decades. In recent years performances have been mainly around the Bundaberg and Gympie Districts. Using a series of Traditional drum beats, mixed with counter beats for tenor drums, the band produces a sound that never fails to stir the blood and set your feet a-marching. Add a couple of bass drums and some cymbals for colour and you have our Kalkie Drum Band!Membership of the band is voluntary and at present is open to students towards the end of Year 3 and all Year 4, 5 and 6 students. The activities of the band in recent years include daily parades, ANZAC Parade in the CBD & Childers Multi-Cultural Festival, State P&C Conference, several street parades and public performances including the Christmas Festival of Lights. Recruitment of new band members takes place in February of the New Year. A small levy is required to assist with maintenance of Drums & uniforms. In 2021 the levy is $30.00 for all participating students. Our Classroom Music Teacher co-ordinates this band with a present parent (past Kalkie student and band member) who assists with drumming tuition. Parents of band members also assist on the Band Committee or at playouts.
